Boots, leggings, and economic justice

Posted on March 7, 2011 by ari

I’m finally breaking down and buying some new, much-needed clothes – a second pair of leggings and a pair of warm, waterproof winter boots. After some searching I found the perfect stuff – as animal-friendly, worker-friendly, and environmentally-friendly as I could get it.

The boots were pretty easy – Shira has these beautiful, gigantic, cozy Sorels, and I wanted something similarly serious, so I got Sorel Women’s Tivoli High Snow Boots. Vegan (no leather or wool), plaid, and fluffy inside? Perfect. I feel bad about the materials used to make and ship these things but I live in a snowy place and I really need good gear! I did appreciate that Sorel allowed me to select a reused cardboard box to ship my order.

The leggings were a bit harder – they also had to be vegan (no wool or silk), and I wanted them to be sweatshop-free and preferably organic. I finally found these nifty charcoal grey footless tights, from Maggie’s. In the process I found a bunch of good online shops I thought I’d share:

  • Justice Clothing – An employee-controlled cooperative
  • Maggie’s Organics – Fair trade-certified, with a focus on environmentally sustainable, organic materials
  • Unionwear – American-made, union-made, UNITE Label
  • Union Label – American-made, union-made items from many sources, in one shop

Do you know of good sources for union-made goods, or things made by worker-owned collectives? Any favorite vegan vendors? Share your know-how in the comments!

    Hello,

I stumbled across this page while researching ethical tights/leggings. I’m having difficulty with this. I see that you also live in Ithaca. Any chance you know of a shop on the commons that sells ethical tights/leggings? I found a pair of leggings at Trader Ks but tights aren’t a second hand option.

    Best to you,
    CA

I’m not sure if they have any, but I’d try The Ithaca Hemp Company. I know they have socks, anyway… let me know if you find anything good! Love your blog, by the way.
