Ithaca Freeskool brings people together to equalize the distribution of knowledge with an emphasis on skills and issues of local importance. Anyone can be a teacher and the classes connect people across differences in age, class, race, gender and subculture.
We heard about the Freeskool before we moved back to Ithaca, NY in 2008, and it was one of the things that made us excited about becoming part of the community. In addition to getting involved as Freeskool organizers, we have facilitated numerous classes on filmmaking, web design, social-networking and outreach, and animal rights. Shira’s still an organizer; Ari stepped down in 2011.
We have also contributed creative services to the Freeskool including designing the physical calendar that is distributed around town, improving and maintaining the website, and documenting classes through photography and video.
